Navajo: Portrait of a Nation
In 1992, I produced a coffee table book called ‘Navajo Portrait of a Nation.’ the project took two years, over 400 days, in the field, capturing the beauty of the Navajo people and the surrounding land. This book also produced a sixty-print, 18-month solo exhibit at the Smithsonian American History Museum in Washington, DC.
Now, 33 years later, I have revisited the images by digitally scanning the negatives and transparencies using current technology and tools such as Photoshop. The editing tools have changed over these past three decades, and my vision as an artist has also changed, breathing new life into these images.
In addition, several images were, for whatever reason, rejected initially at the time of publication due to issues that, by today’s tools, can be easily cleaned up. This idea of revisiting past archive images opens the door to discussing what is permissible to manipulate, especially in a series of three-decade-old photographs, and where we draw the line.
