Retrospectives and Perspectives: from Studio to Contemporary Photography
The continent’s photography is increasingly attracting attention through its presence in the world’s leading museums, galleries, fairs and biennials. Galerie Medina celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Rencontres de Bamako with the exhibition Bamako Dreams 30, where for the very first time the most prominent works from the continent will be shown in the Gulf and more precisely in Sharjah.
The first stars of African photography were revealed to the world in 1994 at the Rencontres de Bamako, Biennale Africaine de la Photographie. In November 2024, the 14th edition of the biennial will put the concepts of a word, speech, silence and noise under scrutiny. Lassana Igo Diarra
Lassana Igo Diarra, a prominent figure in Mali’s cultural scene, serves as General Curator for Rencontres de Bamako. As founder of Galerie Médina and Éditions Balani’s, he has curated international exhibitions and published diverse works. Diarra’s cultural initiatives include the Bamako International Festival of Children’s Literature and the Bamako Symposium Art. Beyond his contributions to the arts, he is an audio-visual producer and active member of various cultural networks.
