Manitoba based photographer Tim Smith documents life on the Canadian prairies. Beginning with a chance encounter, Smith has been photographing Hutterite communities in Manitoba over the past thirteen years. Hutterites, Anabaptist pacifists whose roots trace back to Tyrol, Austria in the wake of the 16th century Radical Reformation, live communally in colonies throughout western Canada and the north-western United States. Although Smith comes from a traditional photojournalism background, his work has been exhibited widely in North America, Europe, Africa and The Middle East. In 2020 he was a finalist for the Luxembourg Art Prize. In 2022 his work will be featured at the Head On Photo Festival in Sydney, Australia, the 9th PHOTO IS:RAEL International Photography Festival travelling exhibition, and the Africa Foto Fair in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, as well as at a solo show at MEWO Kunsthalle in Germany.

In addition to long-term documentary work Smith covers assignments for a variety of editorial clients in the prairies and occasionally further on. His work has garnered several awards including two National Newspaper Awards and a Judges Special Recognition in the Pictures of the Year International (POYI) Community Awareness Award. Portions of his work from the prairies and the Hutterites are part of the Province of Manitoba’s art collection as well as the permanent display at the Múzeum habánov v Sobotišti in Slovakia. Smith is an ally of the Coalition for Women in Journalism.
