Ali Haj suleiman

Ali Haj Suleiman is a Syrian visual journalist and photo editor based in Idlib. A visual storyteller with more than a decade of experience, he has become a voice for the struggles and resilience of Syrian communities living under conflict.

His career began at the age of fourteen when he discovered photography as a way to express and record the realities around him. Growing up during war shaped both his vision and his determination to document stories of survival and dignity.

Ali has collaborated extensively with international human rights organisations, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and The Syria Campaign, producing powerful documentation of displacement, injustice and humanitarian need. His images and reporting have been published by leading outlets, including Getty Images and Al Jazeera English, thereby extending his work to global audiences. Over the years, he has also partnered with non-governmental organisations and advocacy groups, creating visual records that influence humanitarian responses and awareness campaigns.

Working in high-risk environments, Ali frequently documents the aftermath of airstrikes, the conditions of refugee camps and the quiet resilience of families rebuilding their lives. His journalism reflects both courage and empathy, striking a balance between the urgency of news and the intimacy of personal storytelling.

Ali’s work is recognised for its blend of immediacy and human depth. His images move beyond headlines to reveal the emotional weight of conflict, emphasising the personal stories of those displaced and marginalised. He often frames his subjects with dignity, resisting sensationalism in favour of authenticity and respect.

Beyond photography, Ali produces multimedia reports and field investigations that provide a fuller context to the Syrian crisis. His approach prioritises safety, both for himself and his subjects, while maintaining the commitment to bear witness. By sharing the realities of war-torn communities, he ensures that voices otherwise silenced are brought to the world’s attention. His contribution has made him one of the most significant young chroniclers of Syria’s recent history.

Ali is twenty-five years old and continues to live and work in Idlib, Syria. His images and reporting have been showcased internationally, contributing to exhibitions, features and advocacy projects that highlight the ongoing humanitarian crisis in his country.
