Aidan Sullivan is an internationally renowned media expert, photography industry leader and entrepreneur whose five decade career spans photojournalism, editorial photography and visual storytelling. He has held senior positions at The Sunday Times and Getty Images while remaining a committed advocate for photographers and independent photojournalism.
Central to his career is the Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant, which Sullivan founded following Parrys death while covering the Romanian Revolution in 1989. As Chairman and Founder, he has helped develop the grant into an internationally respected platform supporting emerging documentary photographers and photojournalists.
Sullivan began his career as a staff photographer for a local newspaper before moving to Fleet Street as a freelance news photographer, covering international events and conflicts including Afghanistan and Northern Ireland. In 1986, he joined The Sunday Times as Deputy Picture Editor, then became Picture Editor and later Assistant Editor at The Sunday Times Magazine, where he oversaw photography.
Alongside his editorial career, Sullivan co-founded image.net, pioneering a digital system for distributing high-resolution publicity material for the entertainment industry. After Getty Images acquired it, he joined the company and became Vice President of Photo Assignments. He subsequently created Reportage by Getty Images, representing leading international photojournalists and documentary photographers.
In 2016, Sullivan founded Verbatim Photo, where he continues as Chief Executive Officer. The agency works with established photographers and filmmakers, producing visual content for brands, advertising agencies and non-profit organisations while helping photographers develop and fund ambitious visual projects.
The Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant was established in memory of British photojournalist Ian Parry, who was just 24 when he died on assignment for The Sunday Times during the Romanian Revolution. Sullivan, who worked closely with Parry as his picture editor, created the initiative with Parry’s family and friends to give young photographers opportunities at the start of their careers.
For more than three decades, the grant has supported emerging photographers internationally, providing funding, mentorship and professional exposure to help them undertake significant documentary projects. Sullivan’s continued leadership of the programme reflects a wider commitment to ensuring that talented young photographers receive the guidance and opportunities needed to build meaningful careers in photojournalism.
His influence extends across the international photography industry. Sullivan chaired the 2012 World Press Photo Contest jury, served as a World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass master, and judged major international photography awards. He was named International Picture Editor of the Year at Visa pour l’Image and is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.
