Endangered Heritage of the Middle East
Over the past few decades, the cultural heritage of the Middle East has been increasingly threatened by neglect, misappropriation, and deliberate destruction. Since 2010, Richard Wilding has worked on projects which aim to preserve vulnerable heritage in diverse regions of Asia and North Africa including Saudi Arabia, Kurdistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and Afghanistan.
In this talk, illustrated by his photography, Richard will show his work undertaken with the ‘Mansoojat Foundation’ to preserve Saudi Arabia’s traditional costumes and artisanal crafts, and his work documenting the legacy of cultural destruction in Iraqi Kurdistan and Northern Iraq. He will also talk about ‘Eye on Heritage’ – a platform he co-founded to help local filmmakers in Syria and Afghanistan to promote their music, poetry and storytelling traditions to international audiences.

Richard WildingLondon-based curator, photographer, and filmmaker Richard Wilding specializes in exhibitions, films, and publications focused on cultural identity, history, and heritage. Over 13 years, he extensively researched and documented traditional costumes, crafts, archaeology, and architecture in Saudi Arabia. A trustee of the Mansoojat Foundation, he contributed to the book ‘Traditional Costumes of Saudi Arabia.’ As Creative Director of Gulan since 2012, he promotes Kurdish culture. Richard, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, co-founded ‘Eye on Heritage’ to document cultural traditions in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
