Gilles Cargueray is a French curator, editorial director and cultural project manager specialising in photography. Working across exhibitions, books, festivals and visual communication, he supports photographers and institutions in developing projects from initial concept through editing, production, publication and exhibition.
His approach begins with understanding each photographer’s values, vision and artistic direction, allowing projects to develop without losing their individual identity. Drawing on experience across documentary photography, publishing, luxury and cultural organisations, Cargueray connects creative development with the practical expertise required to bring ambitious photographic projects to international audiences.
Cargueray studied Luxury and Creative Brand Management at ESSEC Business School before joining Leica Camera France as Brand Marketing Manager. He later moved to Leica Camera AGs global headquarters in Wetzlar as Brand Partnership Manager, developing strategic collaborations with organisations including BMW Group Culture and Ermenegildo Zegna.
His experience at the intersection of photography, publishing and brand development subsequently expanded into curatorial and editorial practice. As Editorial Director of ditions Odysse, he oversaw numerous photographic books, developing publications from editorial direction and image selection through production and printing. His collaborations have included photographers such as Edouard Elias and Laura Bonnefous, alongside organisations including Leica Camera France, Leica Camera AG and the Fondation des Treilles.
Cargueray has also developed and curated exhibitions, working closely with photographers and institutions to translate photographic series into coherent physical experiences. His practice centres on maintaining the photographer’s artistic intention while creating the editorial structure necessary for exhibitions and publications to communicate effectively.
Supporting photographers is central to Carguerays work. He regularly conducts portfolio reviews and participates in photography festivals and professional programmes, including Les Rencontres dArles, Visa pour lImage and events in Bucharest, Budapest, Braga and Vevey. His reviews focus not only on individual photographs but also on helping photographers structure projects, strengthen visual narratives, and consider how their work can develop toward publication or exhibition.
Cargueray has co-produced exhibitions with photographers, festivals, museums and art foundations, bringing together his experience in editing, publishing, production and visual communication. His professional collaborations span individual photographers, cultural institutions and international photographic organisations.
Through curating, publishing, portfolio reviews and project development, Cargueray continues to support established and emerging photographers in bringing their work to wider audiences. His approach is characterised by close collaboration and an understanding that successful photographic projects depend on preserving the photographer’s individual vision while finding the most effective form in which to communicate it.
