Lars Boering is an internationally recognised expert and advisor on photography, visual culture and visual journalism, with more than 25 years of leadership experience across cultural, creative and social organisations. A consultant, collector and curator, he has worked extensively with photographers, festivals, museums, foundations and international media organisations.
Throughout his career, Boering has focused on strengthening visual storytelling and the professional position of photographers. His work combines organisational leadership with industry advocacy, education and strategic thinking about photography, journalism and the rapidly changing technologies shaping visual communication.
Boering served as Managing Director of the World Press Photo Foundation from 2015 to 2020, leading one of the worlds most influential organisations for photojournalism and visual storytelling. During his tenure, World Press Photo expanded talent development, grants and digital engagement while strengthening its commitment to trustworthy visual journalism and connecting global audiences with stories that matter.
He subsequently led the European Journalism Centre, supporting journalism and media organisations across Europe during a period of significant technological and economic change. In this role, Boering became closely involved in the debate surrounding artificial intelligence and journalism. He was a member of the international commission chaired by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa that developed the Paris Charter on AI and Journalism, published in 2023 to establish ethical principles for the use of artificial intelligence in news and media.
In 2026, Boering moved into a new leadership role within the Dutch archival sector, extending his long-standing engagement with photography, cultural heritage and the preservation of visual history.
Alongside institutional leadership, Boering has co-produced exhibitions with photographers, festivals, museums and art foundations and has served on juries for major international photography awards, including the Global Peace Photo Award and Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant. He is also an IFPA judge at Xposure.
Boering founded Triggertale, a platform dedicated to visual communication and storytelling. He is Chair of the Maria Austria Institute, which preserves and manages important photographic archives connected with Amsterdam and Dutch photographic history. His involvement with archives reflects a wider interest in ensuring photography remains accessible and meaningful for future generations.

He is particularly committed to coaching photographers and creatives to develop sustainable careers by concentrating on the value of their work.
