Ras Al Khaimah-based, award winning photographer Gillian M Robertson is a cultural photo storyteller known for her immersive, intuitive, individual approach.
An alumna of Edinburgh Napier University, her work earned international recognition from Scottish Portrait Awards, Royal Scottish Academy, and British Council.
Commissioned by RAK Ports, Gillian created Ports as Crossroads of Civilisation, a 25-image humancentred industry narrative uncovering geometry, beauty, and meaning within high-functioning maritime spaces.
Her studio and gallery sit within Al Jazeera Al Hamra’s Heritage Souk, as she completes her debut book, The Women of Ras Al Khaimah.
Gillian M Robertson is a cultural photo-storyteller whose work begins in the quiet, vulnerable space between looking and truly seeing. Her photo-stories are never imposed; they surface through presence and time, shaped by instinct, intuition, patience, and the courage to follow gaze. She understands that every image is defined by what she notices, where she stands, and the choice that shapes style and story with each click.
An Edinburgh Napier University alumna, Gillian focused her studies on still life and portraiture, foundations that continue to inform her humancentred, empowering photography. This way of capturing has earned her access to complex working worlds, including RAK Ports, where industrial corridors, maritime infrastructure, and skilled manpower operate 24/7.
Immersed over months, Gillian created Ports as Crossroads of Civilisation, an industry narrative that uncovers geometry in complexity, tenderness in labour, and human scale in spaces built for machines.
Her collections, often described as visual poetry, have been commissioned by the British Council for a seven nation touring exhibition, awarded First Prize at the Ras Al Khaimah Art Festival, and selected by the Scottish Portrait Awards for her portrait of UK celebrity Bill Bailey.
In 2023, Gillian became resident photographer at Design Gallery, RAKs first art space.
Gillian and the camera became one many decades ago. From an early age, her creative appetite was drawn to colour, texture, personality, and conversation – recognising instinctively that moments of meaning become lasting only when held by the lens. For her, photography remains a solitary craft shaped by attention, presence, and choice.
Three years of study at Edinburgh Napier University allowed Gillian to springboard her majors in still life and portraiture into the professional world. Early in her career, if she was not taking the photographs herself, her styling and creative production studio was entrusted to storyboard and build sets for commercial shoots, working with established names, emerging talent, and rising stars.
Her creative eye and business acumen continue to work in tandem: building brand equity for clients, while empowering personal and corporate narratives through portraiture. Over the past decade, Gillians photo-storytelling has featured widely at art festivals, as well as sector and community exhibitions.
She is celebrated by industry and in demand as a speaker, panellist, and media commentator, from Asia to the Arabian Gulf, to the UK and her native Scotland. Gillian also delivers mentoring workshops and presentations for emerging photographers, business forums, and cultural groups.
Gillian has featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, from Asia to the Arabian Gulf, to the UK and her native Scotland – where her portrait of British celebrity Bill Bailey was exhibited at the Scottish Royal Arts Club.
She is a sought after speaker, panelist, teacher, and mentor, presenting at art festivals, business gatherings, conferences, and workshops.
Gillian is currently sourcing publishing support for her first book – a legacy driven photo essay telling the authentic story of the Women of Ras Al Khaimah: in the mountains, by the sea, on the sand.
