Kathy Moran is one of the most influential figures in visual storytelling and conservation photography. As the first senior editor for natural history at National Geographic, she shaped over 350 stories. Her work is grounded in narrative integrity and visual clarity, guiding photographers to craft compelling, purpose-driven essays. Kathy’s legacy is defined by her ability to connect image and message, helping audiences see the natural world not just as a spectacle but as something profoundly interconnected and urgently worth protecting.
Throughout her distinguished career, Kathy Moran has edited some of National Geographic’s most iconic natural history features, including Brent Stirton’s award-winning coverage of Virunga and the rhino trade and the Yellowstone issue of May 2016. As project manager for the collaboration between photographer Nick Nichols and Dr Michael Fay on their expedition across Central Africa, she helped deliver stories pivotal in establishing Gabon’s national park system. Her editorial leadership has consistently brought together science, photography, and storytelling with purpose and power.
Beyond her work at National Geographic, Kathy has edited numerous books, including Women Photographers at National Geographic, The Africa Diaries, Cat Shots, and Tigers Forever. She has curated major exhibitions such as 50 Best Wildlife Photographs and was chair of London’s Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, a role she continues through 2027. She is a founding member of the International League of Conservation Photographers and has juried for some of the world’s most respected photography awards. Kathy’s influence extends far beyond editing—she has helped define the standards for conservation photography itself.
Today, Kathy Moran continues to shape the future of visual storytelling through her editorial venture, Moran Griffin. Drawing from decades of experience, she collaborates with photographers, NGOs, publishers, and institutions to develop powerful visual narratives centred on conservation and the environment. Her editorial consulting focuses on story refinement, image sequencing, and narrative structure, helping photographers transform their work into coherent, emotionally resonant stories.
Kathy also mentors emerging talent, offering portfolio reviews and one-to-one guidance for those developing long-form projects. Through her curatorial work, she contributes to exhibitions that showcase photography and spark dialogue around ecological and humanitarian issues. She remains a trusted voice in the field, known for her discerning eye, collaborative spirit, and commitment to purpose-driven storytelling.
Her approach is grounded in the belief that well-crafted photography can create awareness, shift perspectives, and contribute to real-world impact. Whether behind the scenes or in public forums, Kathy continues to champion the role of photography as a tool for conservation and connection, helping storytellers reach audiences with clarity, depth, and emotional power.
