Dr. Lawrence Blair is an anthropologist, specializing in the sub-field of psycho-anthropology, which focuses on the power of beliefs, and how they exteriorize into the subtle abilities of tribal peoples, (environmental awareness, ancient healing techniques, psycho-navigation, etc.) His photographs appear in both his bestselling book Ring of Fire – An Indonesian Odyssey and in his recently published coffee table book Shadows of the Ring of Fire Fading dreams of a Vanishing World on a Warming Earth. He exhibited and sold these pictures at the Sun Contemporary Gallery, in Bali.
Dr. Lawrence Blair is an explorer, film maker, author and public speaker on the peoples and creatures of Indonesia. Born in the UK, he was brought up in France and Mexico, but has been a resident of Indonesia for the past 50 years. He wrote his doctoral thesis for Lancaster
University, the UK, on pyscho-anthropology, a field which he helped define. He is the writer, presenter and co-producer (with his late brother) of the PBS and BBC TV adventure series Ring of Fire An Indonesian Odyssey, winner of two EMMY awards, and is also the author of the book of the same title. He has written and presented numerous other films for television, including the 5 part adventure series Myths, Magic and Monsters for SKY TV UK , and Bali Island of the Dogs, and most recently, Behind the Seen, a short, award-winning film exploring quantum biology and distributed intelligence in the seas of Indonesia. Lawrence has lectured and appeared widely on international radio and tv, elucidating psycho-anthropology, tribal mysticism and the secrets of Indonesia. Lawrences photographs have captured the attention of The Getty Foundation, who are currently co-producers of his upcoming international documentary film Behind the Ring of Fire.
Lawrence Blair was born in the UK and educated in England, France and Mexico. He wrote his doctoral thesis at Lancaster University, UK, which helped define the field of psycho anthropology. He has been living in and exploring Indonesia for the past fifty years, where he has worked an anthropologist, film-maker, ship-board lecturer and adventurer.
Books: Blairs two internationally best-selling books are Rhythms of Vision The Changing Patterns of Belief, and Ring of Fire An Indonesia Odyssey. His third, mainly photographic book, published in 2025, is Shadows of the Ring of Fire Fading Dreams of a Vanishing World on a Warming Earth.
Films: Ring of Fire An Indonesian Odyssey, a 5-episode series co-produced by the BBC and PBS in the States. Recent internationally award-winning documentaries include: Bali Island of the Dogs, and Behind the Seen, which examines consciousness in nature.
