Patrick Kabunse Chilaisha is a Zambian photographer and lens-based digital artist whose work is rooted in fine art photographic manipulations. Known for his thought-provoking and visually arresting pieces, Chilaisha’s creative practice delves into the intersection of self-expression and cultural identities. He challenges historical narratives and examines contemporary cultural understandings while offering visionary interpretations of alternative futures. He merges elements of Zambian heritage, identity, and personal exploration with each composition, creating compelling visual stories that invite audiences to reflect and engage.
Chilaisha’s passion for photography began in his youth, growing up in Zambia’s vibrant arts community. His curiosity about the power of visual storytelling led him to pursue a career as a fine art photographer. As the first Zambian lens-based artist to be shortlisted for the prestigious Cynthia Zukas Young Artists Award, he gained early recognition for his distinct voice and approach. His work was featured at the renowned Chaminuka Gallery in the “Transition” Young Artists exhibition, marking a significant milestone in his developing career.
In 2020, Chilaisha participated in the PhotoCovidZambia project, a collaboration between the Zambian National Visual Arts Council and Anglia Ruskin University. In 2024, he was selected for the Stories of Kalingalinga photography workshop, further honing his storytelling skills.
In 2022, Chilaisha was awarded a joint Affect and Colonialism Web Lab Fellowship at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. This opportunity allowed him to deepen his exploration of cultural narratives, expanding his international profile and influence in the photographic arts.
