Dr Shane Hulbert is a Melbourne based artist, academic and curator. He is currently an Associate Professor of Photography in the School of Art at RMIT University, where he lectures in photographic imaging technologies and visual culture, from undergraduate through to doctorial supervision.
He is an award winning photographer, whose work has been shown nationally and internationally, most notably at the National Gallery of Victoria and the Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP), both in Melbourne, Australia, and international photography festivals including the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China, Eyes on Main Street in North Carolina, US and the Xposure International Photography Festival in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. He writes on contemporary photography and art education, and his photographic practice explores and critiques the expression of a collective national Australian identity through distinct and popular iconography that connects place, history and culture.
He produces the Australian Photography Video Channel in partnership with the Museum of Australian Photography, which povides in-depth interviews and critiques of Australian photography and photographers.

Australian Iranian artist Hoda Afshar discusses her practice and exhibition Speak the Wind with RMIT University Associate Professor of Photography Dr Shane Hulbert.
Dr Hulbert has worked at RMIT University in several roles since 2001. He has managed multiple award programs, including Fine Art and Photography, as well as developed and managed Australia’s only University credited Master of Photography program. He was the inaugral Associate Dean of Photography and Chair of the School of Art Education Committee from 2018 to 2021.
He has been on mulitple industry boards, including the Australian Committee for University Art & Design Schools, Tsinghua University Discipline Review Committee member, research reviewer for Hong Kong Baptist University and Macau University of Science & Technology, as well as Doctorial examiner for Universities in Australia and China. He has been a judge for the Australian Walkley Awards for excellence in Photojournalism, Head On Photography Festival, Xposure Film Festival and the QS Education Awards.
