IFPA Awards

In photojournalism, freelancers value freedom and variety but are vulnerable because of a lack of stability and security. Independent and freelance photojournalists often work without the backing of major institutions, yet their images illuminate crises, conflicts, cultures, beauty, solutions and stories that might otherwise remain unseen.

The Independent and Freelance Photojournalist Award (IFPA) champions those who work without institutional backing to tell urgent, often unseen stories. One of the few international grants dedicated to independent photojournalism, it gives voice to photographers working in the most challenging conditions.

Entrants keep full copyright of their work, gaining global recognition while retaining ownership of their stories. The USD 15,000 first place award provides the means to continue vital reporting, with the winner honoured on stage at Xposure, one of the world’s leading platforms for visual storytelling.

Shortlisted essays are also exhibited at Xposure, reaching industry leaders, media organisations and the public, with certificates of merit recognising further outstanding work.

OVERVIEW

The Independent and Freelance Photojournalist Award is more than a prize: it is a commitment to defending truth and amplifying voices that might otherwise go unheard. Independent and freelance photojournalists often work without support from major institutions, yet their images shape global understanding of conflict, resilience and change.

Photojournalism requires courage, integrity and an unshakable ethical framework. It is not only about capturing moments but about bearing witness, creating authentic records that demand accountability and inspire awareness. Free inquiry, expression and press freedom lie at the heart of this work.

Entries can be submitted across three categories: Spot News for urgent events of public consequence; Environment for stories of the natural world and human impact; and Solutions for reporting that explores how communities confront and respond to challenges.

Winners receive a USD 15,000 cash award and international recognition at Xposure, one of the world’s foremost platforms for photography and visual storytelling. Shortlisted entrants also gain the chance to exhibit their essays before an audience of industry leaders, media organisations and the public.

If you believe in the power of photography to make a difference, IFPA offers the stage, the recognition and the support to carry your story further.
