André Liohn spent his childhood in Botucatu, Brazil. In his early 20s, he moved to Trondheim, Norway, where he lived for 15 years. He began his photography career at the age of 30 and was significantly influenced by Czech photographer Antonín Kratochvíl, who became his mentor and friend.
In 2011, Liohn made history as the first Latin American photojournalist to receive the Robert Capa Gold Medal from the Overseas Press Club for his coverage of the Libyan Civil War. His work also earned him a nomination from the Prix Bayeux-Calvados des Correspondents de Guerre. Liohn’s documentation of the challenges faced by healthcare personnel in conflict zones has been utilized by the ICRC’s Health Care in Danger project to highlight and denounce violence against medical workers globally.
In 2012, André Liohn, along with photographers Christopher Morris, Jehad Nga, Bryan Denton, Lynsey Addario, Eric Bouvet, and Finbarr O’Reilly, created the project Almost Dawn in Libya. They held photo exhibits in Tripoli, Benghazi, Misurata, and Zintan, aiming to use photojournalism for reconciliation after the Libyan Civil War. The project, funded by Emphas.is and the International Medical Corps, received extensive media coverage. The exhibits were curated by Annalisa D’Angelo and Paolo Pellegrin.
