As a photographer, Carsten Egevang is internationally acclaimed with awards in numerous photo competitions – including category winner in the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year. In 2012, he received the Environment and Nature Award from the Greenland Government for his visual communication of research results. The work of Egevang has been represented in numerous books, publications, and internationally curated exhibitions, from Abu Dhabi to Greenland.

Carsten Egevang started his career as a traditional wildlife photographer focusing on birds and mammals in the majestic landscapes of Greenland with an emphasis on animal adaptations to the Arctic environment. Later, he turned his interest toward the unique interactions between humans and wildlife in Greenland. By spending long periods of time with local Inuit hunters in Greenland, he communicates the strong connection to and dependency on the environment through his lens. Using his photography, the ambition of Carsten Egevang is not only to present the natural beauty of Greenland but for the viewer to obtain a deeper understanding of the Inuit culture – and how living conditions for both man and animals are changing rapidly in the Arctic due to global climate change.

The mythological Raven. Thule, Greenland, April 2018.

In recent years, Egevang has been working on a research and communication project on the Greenland sled dog. The sled dog population in Greenland has declined by more than 50 % over the past 2-3 decades, among several factors, because of a warmer climate, leaving the ancient dog sled culture endangered. Through his photography, Carsten has been documenting the present use of the dog in Greenland along with providing the visual profile for communicating the research results of the project.

Carsten Egevang is a core member of the Arctic Arts Project, an international group of visual artists communicating the effects of climate change.
