Daphne Wesdorp, born in 1997 in Frisia, is a Dutch photographer and writer specializing in global popular armed resistance and grassroots mobilization. Her work is driven by a deep fascination with de-facto states and conflicts that rarely make headlines in mainstream media. Over the past three years, she has dedicated her efforts to covering regions such as Kurdistan, Iraq, Palestine, Myanmar, Tigray, and most extensively, Ukraine.
Wesdorp’s primary platform is the Dutch newspaper Nederlands Dagblad, and she is represented by the photo agency De Beeldunie. In addition to her regular contributions, her work has been featured in several notable publications, including Getty, WIRED, Popular Front, and National Geographic.
Before starting her career in journalism and documentary photography, Wesdorp briefly studied Fine Arts at Minerva Academy in Groningen. She then completed a bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Utrecht University, with a focus on Conflict and Middle Eastern studies.
Wesdorp’s photography aims to shatter the sheltered perceptions of those who have never experienced the hardships of war by presenting the raw, unpolished reality of a different, yet equally real world. Her stories, whether in writing, photography, or complementary formats, predominantly focus on ordinary people living in extraordinary circumstances.
Growing up as the daughter of a photographer, Wesdorp was naturally inclined to follow in her father’s footsteps and started photography from an early age. Currently, she is based between Kyiv and Amsterdam.
