George Georgiou was born in London in 1961. He was introduced to photography when he took an‘O level course at school as an extra subject. He went on take study photography on a part-time basis at Sir John Cass school of art, and in 1987 he received a BA Honours in photography, film and video arts from the Polytechnic of Central London (University of Westminster) After teaching photography part-time he decided to pursue photography full time.
In 1999 George joined Panos Pictures in London and began to work exclusively on his own long-term projects. He has photographed extensively in the Balkans, Eastern Europe and Turkey, living and working in Serbia, Greece and Turkey from 1999 to 2009. Work from this period resulted in the acclaimed book, “Fault Line/Turkey/East/West” 2010.
“Fault Lines” has been exhibited many times internationally and was included in the prestigious “New Photography 2011″ exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
On his return to London, he started work on a major project about London. His book “Last Stop” photographed London through the windows of its famous double-decker buses was self-published in 2015.
In 2016 Georgiou began a year-long project supported by the NYT’s magazine to photograph American communities viewing parades as a means to create a group portrait of Americans, an America of multiple identities, where people stand together, in a company of strangers.
The work resulted in the book, Americans Parade, which was short-listed for the Aperture/Paris Photo-best photobook 2019.
Throughout this time Georgiou has taught numerous workshops.
Several institutions and private collectors, including the Museum of Modern Art, NY and the Elton John collection, collect Georgiou’s work.
