Matjaž Krivic is a documentary photographer capturing long-term stories of people, places, and the environment. For over 25 years, he has travelled the globe documenting social, cultural, and ecological change through an intense and personal visual style.
His work focuses on regions marked by tradition, spiritual life, and unrest, and in recent years has shifted toward environmental and conservation stories. Through his photography, Matjaž advocates for a more sustainable and conscious future while exploring the complex relationship between people and the changing planet they call home.
Krivic’s career as a documentary photographer spans more than two decades and reflects a deep commitment to visual storytelling that gives voice to the overlooked. His early work portrayed lives shaped by poverty, devotion, and tradition in some of the world’s most remote and underrepresented regions. Over time, his lens turned increasingly toward environmental concerns, capturing long-form stories illuminating the consequences of climate change, resource extraction, and the urgent need for conservation.
His photographs have been featured in major international publications, including National Geographic, BBC, Wired, Geo, Stern, The Guardian, Le Figaro, and The Wall Street Journal. His exhibitions have appeared worldwide at prestigious venues and festivals such as La Gacilly Photo, Les Rencontres d’Arles, and Visa pour l’image. Matjaž’s work has earned him World Press Photo, Picture of the Year International, and Lens Culture recognition.
A passionate advocate for visual education, he has judged numerous international competitions and delivered workshops worldwide. He is also co-founder and creative director of Bolivia’s first major photography festival, FotoFestival Manzana1. Whether through still imagery or multimedia projects, Matjaž brings clarity and empathy to the pressing global stories of our time.
In recent years, Matjaž Krivic has become a leading visual voice for environmental storytelling. He brings a long-form, human-centred approach to documenting the shifting landscapes of our planet and the people who live within them. His projects highlight both the consequences of environmental degradation and the resilience of those adapting to change, from coal fields to lithium mines, from desert communities to glacial melt zones.
His photography seeks to bridge the gap between global challenges and local realities. Rather than focusing only on crisis, Matjaž’s stories often uncover potential solutions—whether found in Indigenous knowledge, scientific innovation, or community activism. His visual narratives combine aesthetic strength with documentary rigour, creating emotionally resonant images that inform and inspire.
Matjaž also engages in collaborative storytelling, working alongside journalists, filmmakers, and environmental organisations to expand the reach and impact of his projects. He sees photography not just as observation but as participation—a tool to foster awareness and contribute meaningfully to the conversations around sustainability, climate justice, and ecological balance.
Through exhibitions, workshops, and published work, he continues to challenge audiences to see the world differently and to act with urgency and compassion for the planet’s future.
