Rob Irving is a distinguished London-based professional photographer with 25 years of experience in commercial photography, specializing in people, products, events, and architecture. Renowned for his ability to capture the true essence of his subjects, Rob believes that a photograph reveals as much about the photographer as it does about the subject. His empathetic approach allows him to connect deeply with individuals, creating emotionally compelling images by leading with openness and authenticity.

Rob’s passion for photography ignited at the age of eight when he first picked up a camera. This early fascination evolved into a lifelong commitment, honed through self-teaching and a journey marked by numerous learning experiences. He views the camera not as a barrier but as a tool that enhances our perception of the world, capturing the interplay of light and its effects on the environment and subjects.

Educated in Cultural Geography with Photography at Queen Mary University of London and Roskilde University in Copenhagen, Rob’s academic background enriches his understanding of the deeper narratives and belief systems that images can convey. His career has been significantly shaped by his time with National Geographic photographer Cary Wolinsky during his thesis research, which broadened his perspective on visual storytelling.

In addition to his commercial work, Rob is a dedicated street photographer, finding inspiration in the ever-changing urban landscape both in London and abroad. He embraces the challenges of street photography as a way to sharpen his skills and anticipate the decisive moment amid the chaos of daily life, a concept championed by Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Rob is also a key member of Xposure’s educational team, where he contributes his expertise to developing and delivering educational programs. Through Xposure, he helps aspiring photographers enhance their skills and understanding of the craft, sharing his insights and passion for the medium.

Rob Irving’s approach to photography reflects a belief in the power of images to connect us more deeply with the world around us. As Dorothea Lange famously said, “The camera is an instrument that teaches us how to see without a camera,” a sentiment that encapsulates Rob’s philosophy and approach to his work.
